After dinner, I helped my mom with the dishes while Marie gave Evan his apple pie.

“Thank you for coming to dinner, Kirsten,” my mom said quietly.

“You’re welcome, Mom. As always, dinner was delicious.”

“You can always come home for dinner.”

“I know.” I looked up and smiled. “I better get going. I have some work that I need to catch up on.”

“Kirsten, I think you work too hard,” my mom replied with concern in her eyes.

“I promise you, Mom, I’m not.”

“You look tired.”

“Just been a long week.”

“Are you sure that’s it?”

“Yes. It’s nothing that a good night’s sleep won’t fix.”

“Okay. I love you.”

“Love you, too, Mom.”

I towel-dried my hands, gave my mom a hug, and walked into the living room.

“All right, Dad. Later.”

My dad looked up from the TV. “Going so soon?”

“Yeah, I have some work to finish up.”

“Are you sure you don’t want some of Marie’s apple pie?” asked Evan.

“I’m sure. Why don’t you have my piece?” I giggled.

Evan stood up and walked toward the kitchen. “Marie, baby, can I get some more of that pie? It was so warm and gooey.”

I shook my head, trying my hardest not to lose it again. “Bye, guys.”

“Bye, Kirsten.” I heard in unison before I shut the door.
